Why be plain when you can be elegant or fancy? Roller shades do come in stock colors of whites, creams, or dark colors for blackout and sleep window shades. However, you can also get them in beautiful colors and patterns, or cover them with fabrics. Roller shades are versatile; you can roll up or roll down as desired. If you have less than the best view out the windows, or are very close to neighbors, consider mounting them to roll up instead of down. You can block out street level views but still let the sun shine in the upper areas of your windows with roll up window shades. Roll down window shades are more traditional, and are great for homes that do not have natural shade to protect from summer heat and glaring sunshine. Roller shades can be mounted either inside or outside the window frame. Where you decide to place them depends on the size of the window, the outdoor view, and the amount of light and heat control you want to have. By mounting them fully outside the frame, you cover all the incoming sunshine, add size to the window, and can block out more light or heat. Inside the frame, you have the option of using the frame itself as a designer frame for your pretty color or pattern window shades. You can use a matching or contrasting valence on top or at the sides of your window shades for a bigger look or to hide the shade roll.

There are several types of window shades; blackout or sleep shades, translucent light filter window shades, and the decorative shades. And, you have another option, the solar shade that is a light filtering precision screen. This is similar to a screen, it cuts glare and gives some privacy but you can still see outside easily. When you add colorful or patterned fabrics to roller shades, you add density and some weight, but can match other items in your room, or room color schemes. These cost a little more than the others, but you will end up with a real coordinated designer look to your room.

All the roller shades are a material that is rolled up on a movable tube that has a mechanism that allows you to roll the shade to the level you want and lock it in place until you again adjust it. These control systems are improved over older systems, and are more durable and easier to adjust. One such control system, which makes the function much easier, is called Smooth Lift.

Some fabric roller shades are coated and there are no tiny holes for light to sneak in thorough. Vinyl roller shades come in many colors and are the least expensive and easy to find online or at blind stores.
