The first question most people have is, What the heck is a Google?” It is a play on the word googol,” which is the mathematical figure 1 followed by 100 zeros. Depending on the level of your love for math, this is either the greatest or lamest name for a search engine. Regardless, the clever kids at Google have turned it into a cultural standard.
The Beginning
Larry Page and Sergey Brin co-founded Google in January of 1996, then known as BackRub. The boys were in the early twenties and classic computer geeks. Sergey was born in Moscow, alum of the University of Michigan and visiting Stanford. Larry was assigned to be his guide. During this visit, they obviously hit it off or today nobody would give a hoot about linking strategies.
Although two men and the name BackRub” may raise some questions, the name actually referred to a method for producing search engine rankings. Specifically, the BackRub search engine was designed to analyze the back links” to a site. Although BackRub developed a following with those in the know, nothing much happened for a few years.
1998
As with most new businesses, the boys needed some serious cash. The brass at Yahoo was interested, but initially passed. Sun Microsystems, of all companies, provided an answer. Andy Bechtolsheim was one of the founders of Sun and, thus, had the necessary deep pockets. $100,000 later, the new search engine company was on the way to stardom.
A New Name
As legend has it, BackRub became Google for a rather humorous reason. Apparently, Bechtolsheim accidentally made the $100k check out to Google, Inc.” You can make your own guess as to which one of the boys said, Hey, I have an idea for a new name.” In September of 1998, Google opened a small office in Menlo Park, California. The rest, as they say, is history.
Today, Google is based in Mountain View, California. Google prefers email communication, but you can get a live voice by calling (650) 623-4000. If you really want to talk to them, refuse a charge from the company on the credit card you use for Adwords. They will contact you pretty quickly!
The company went public in 2004 [Symbol: GOOG] and has a stock value of around $360 per share. Larry and Sergey are sickeningly wealthy. One can assume that Andy Bechtolsheim is also doing all right.
The Future
In the last year or so, Google has certainly received its fair share of criticism. PageRank is almost useless in relation to ranking in search results. At the time of this writing, PageRank hasn’t worked for three days, which means a change, shuffle, dance or whatever you want to call it is coming.
On the competition front, things are a bit murky. It seems a week doesn’t go by without a patent lawsuit being filed against the company. MSN and Yahoo have started to raise the level of competition and more will be coming. Google’s reliance on AOL as a traffic source is also a bit troubling given the continual loss of market share by the company that nearly brought Time Warner down. Gmail is dogged by patent issues, not to mention questions about violations of the privacy of users. All and all, things are not as rosy compared to a few years ago, but they can hardly be called bad.
Your guess is as good as mine when it comes to predicting if Google will become just another search engine. Personally, I think it will, but not because of any of the above. Instead, the evolution of the Internet suggests there will be a next big thing.” Who knows, maybe Google will get a Grub [Grub.org] in its Nutch [Nutch.org].

12 Benjamin Graham Stocks for Defensive Investors
Many investors, such as Warren Buffett, praise defensive investing. Buffett says the first rule of investing is not to lose money, and the second rule of investing is not to forget the first rule. The mentor of this legendary investor, Benjamin Graham, always recommended investing with a margin of safety. Defensive investing doesn’t always bring the best returns; however, it usually provides better protection in inflationary environments.
We are concerned about the Fed’s monetary policy and believe investors may be better off by playing more defensively in near future. Considering the fact that the recent uptrend doesn’t last forever, now may be a good time to follow Graham’s recommendation and invest with a margin of safety. Graham describes the margin of safety concept in Intelligent Investor in detail. Here is what he prescribes for defensive investors:
The selection of common stocks for the portfolio of the defensive investor should be a relatively simple matter. Here we would suggest four rules to
1. There should be adequate though not excessive diversification. This might mean a minimum of ten different issues and a maximum of about thirty.
2. Each company selected should be large, prominent, and conservatively financed. Indefinite as these adjectives must be, their general sense is clear.
3. Each company should have a long record of continuous dividend payments.
4. The investor should impose some limit on the price he will pay for an issue in relation to its average earnings over, say, the past seven years. We suggest that this limit be set at 25 times such average earnings, and not more than 20 times those of the last twelve-month period.
We’ve compiled a list of 12 large-cap defensive stocks that may provide a margin of safety to investors. The market data are sourced from Fidelity. All companies in this list have high annualized dividend yields of at least 3%. These stocks also have market capitalizations above $8 billion, current P/E Ratios lower than 20 and maximum total debt/equity ratios of 50%.

Celebrity theme Halloween costumes are far and above the easiest, quickest and most successful of party costumes. Halloween celebrity costumes can be much more than your favorite pop or movie star. So many people and sports stars pop out of the news everyday, you’ll could never run out of ideas. Here’s a good one: Governor Sarah Palin is now a celebrity politician. Early 1950s eyeglasses, a navy suit and a 1950s bouffant. Easily replicated and identified! Arguably one of the top pick quick Halloween celebrity costume ideas. So if you are invited to a sort of impromptu Halloween bash at the last minute, and you get just a week’s notice, with costume rental shops out of stock and discount store racks picked clean, you’re still in business. Where do you find a costume? Here are four how-to put together quick Halloween celebrity costume ideas, that let you still be the hit of the party and not clean out your bank account:
1) Choose your favorite celebrity or someone newsworthy. Find the image-search tool on Google to locate pictures for your Halloween celebrity costume choice. The pictures you find will help you figure out what to do, and make a plan. You’ll find the images form a composite style analysis which facilitate quick Halloween celebrity costume ideas.
2) Going as a couple could never be easier than now…look at “Brangelina” for example (Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie) and other famous combine-named couples as you pick out Halloween celebrity costume ideas. Also checkout the online entertainment sites and blogs for the latest gossip and ideas! The concept is to catch the style of the desired celebrity, noting signature items such as hats and jewelry and reproduce their essence, simply. You can shop thrift or retro stores for clothing, shoes and accessories, or go online for theatre prop and costume shops. Something like inexpensive wigs are readily available and can be styled, gelled or whatever; also, makeup may be required to capture the celebrity persona. Your character should be easy to identify, with your true identity anyone’s guess.
3) The femme fatale still a viable Halloween celebrity costume genre. For a retro theme, remember Marilyn Monroe or today it could be Christina Avilar or perhaps Paris Hilton. Marilyn would require red lipstick, a short blond wig with a glamorous style and a 1950s glamor girl dress with wide skirt and dainty heels. Among the femme fatales, Paris might require nothing more than lingerie, the wig and plenty of pink lipstick and mascara if you have the nerve. Otherwise, you can go for a sun dress. Unmistakably Paris.
4) How about some classic celebrities? Lauren Bacall and Bogie had strong, distinctive personas and would make great Halloween celebrity costumes. Lauren’s signatures were her slim 1940s high-class dresses, her hair and a provocative, stage presence. It is even easier to find stuff for these characters at thrift and retro stores; and good wigs are your prime resources.
Bogie’s hat, the ever present cigarette and plain suit describe him to a T. Add a little sophisticated macho and you’re Bogie. Developing your character is key to making any quick Halloween celebrity costume idea work. Using these techniques, think about these celebrity possibilities: Elvis is a perennial favorite. How about Dustin Hoffman as Tootsie, complete with 1950s eyeglasses and shimmering red vamp dress? Don’t forget how scare fans may enjoy being Robert Englund, as Freddie Krueger or the Phantom of the Opera. Hannibal
Lecter is another unforgettable scary guy. Get a mask like that he wore in the institutional lockup. How about Hannibal and Clarise? A couple? She’s Clarice, with a bottle of Chianti and a piece of liver. Pick your celebrity, and now you’re ready!

For more information on our product, the Holiday Property Bond, see the Further Information âFact Boxâ below.
From the moment you navigate your hire car into Rocha Bravaâs peaceful semi-pedestrianised streets – taking in the terraced coffee shop and immaculately maintained gardens; inhaling the floral-scented air and absorbing the muted sounds of children playing by distant pool sides â you feel your post-flight fatigue literally melting away. And as the batteries begin to recharge in earnest, you know: youâll be in no hurry to return home.
To my mind, Rocha Brava is the very essence of a âholiday destinationâ, providing all the elements you need to holiday your way – in congenial surroundings, yet just a stoneâs throw from all essential amenities (not to mention, a raft of non-essential indulgences). A golden sandy beach lies within easy walking distance â as do a choice of pools, tennis courts, a fitness centre, boules courts and barbecue areas. Plus, importantly, a selection of quiet bars, cafes, shops and highly regarded restaurants â many offering superb fresh food at affordable prices.
Thereâs culture too. And history: the regionâs many menhirs (standing stones) are of Neolithic origin, dating back to around 5000 BC. And, of course, The Algarveâs former Governors include no less a figure than Henry The Navigator – royal prince, soldier, and âland-borne explorerâ, whose patronage of all things maritime helped to transform Portugal into a major sea power, in the 14th century and beyond.
For the most part however it is the combination of tranquillity and climate that enthrals, keeping holidaymakers of all ages coming back for more – year after year after year.
Undisturbed
Developed by Trafalgar House around 20 years ago, Rocha Bravaâs attractive villas and apartments are constructed in typical Algarve style and feature the usual accoutrements â fully fitted kitchens, TV, DVD and the like â as well as shaded balconies (or terraces) overlooking the attractive shrubberies, well-kept lawns and footpaths that crisscross the site.
In all, HPB owns 48 properties here, responsibility for which rests with longstanding manager John Greenhill, whose office is to be found within the Bondâs exclusive PIN coded clubhouse.
Within the clubhouse and adjacent grounds, Bondholders (investors in the Holiday Property Bond) and their families are able to take advantage of a games room, DVD and book library, together with a lounge, kitchen, showers and luggage store (all of which are extremely handy for holidaymakers who either arrive early or who have a later flight). The area is also home to one of the Bondâs two dedicated swimming pools (which is covered and heated between October and June), a boules court, childrenâs play equipment and a barbecue area (where John plays âmein hostâ at the weekly âbarbieâ).
Though the site itself offers numerous quiet corners in which to soak up the sun in relative privacy, itâs the beaches for which the region is renowned. And rightly so: there are so many to choose from â the majority of which are clean and relatively undisturbed; safe for all but the youngest members of the family: generally calm, shelving gently into the azure depths.
Others â as recent, tragic experience has shown â though beautiful, are suitable only for surfers and more accomplished swimmers. So be careful â and heed the signs.
Go west!
Centianes in particular is a delight, and falls squarely into the former âsafe, peacefulâ category. And the good news is: itâs just a ten-minute walk from Rocha Brava.
Though the shore itself is â it has to be said – a long way down (via 100 or more steps, cut into the steep cliff side), the exercise provides the best possible excuse to stop, en route, for coffee and ice cream at one of the two beach bars.
Other highly recommended beaches are just a 30-minute or so drive away. Though most are accessible via similarly steep steps, Long Beach is an exception – a sandy flat beach at road level, which leads into Armao de Pra in one direction and the Gal beach, with its selection of bars and cafes, in the other.
In John Greenhillâs view, however, the finest coastal stretches lie to the west. Particularly recommended are two popular surfing beaches, Praia da Bordeira and Praia do Amado – both of which contrast golden sands with the most dramatic surf. (Hardy souls wishing to âshoot a few tubesâ will be pleased to learn that Praia do Amado has a surf shop and school, offering boards for hire.)
Then thereâs Praia do Zavial which provides welcome shelter from the fierce winds that invariably buffet the shoreline. Time spent here seems literally to sail by â a good book all thatâs needed to punctuate a revivifying day soaking up the glorious Portuguese sun.
Well, that â and the prospect of some of the finest seafood in Europe.
Unpretentious
The area has a host of restaurants to choose from, at a range of prices. And many fine eateries are within walking distance of Rocha Brava. On the doorstep, the onsite restaurant of O Farol is good, though a little pricey (and the opening hours are somewhat restrictive).
Nearby Julioâs on the other hand is set back from the main road, and offers comfortable seating both inside and out. The food, a mix of international cuisine and Portuguese specialities, is superb and realistically priced; the service friendly without being obsequious.
In particular, the establishment serves a mouth watering âCataplanaâ â the local speciality, which comprises a stew of fish or meat prepared in the traditional clamshell shaped copper pot from which the dish derives its name.
And of course no stay in Portugal would be complete without at least one chicken piri piri. (Indeed, try it early in your holiday and I guarantee it wonât be your last.) In line with Johnâs recommendation, we chose to sample this Portuguese classic at A Rampa- a cheap and cheerful caf setting along the road from Monchique, on our way to the regionâs highest point, Foia.
Here the rustic unpretentious ambiance – paper table cloths dancing in the wind; resident Retriever snoring contentedly in the afternoon sun – belie the spicy and delicious fare, the sweeping valleys providing an idyllic backdrop.
Foia, incidentally, offers spectacular views both to the west coast, and to the south. But the circuitous mountain route is not for the faint-hearted â comprising as it does a narrow cliff-side road with vertiginous drops to the terraces far below.
It is, however, well worth the effort.
To round off your day, be sure to stop off at Caldas, which is renowned for its warm, therapeutic (if somewhat sulphurous) spring water, a small plastic cup of which can be purchased for 10 cntimos. (Itâs quite foul – but supposedly very good for you.)
In Caldasâ pretty tree lined square, youâll find restaurants and a couple of shops, an art gallery and bar.
If youâve any energy left, the footpath up into the hills â though steep â is quite delightful, lined as it is with a variety of shrubs and flowers and of course the bubbling stream.
Car hire
Although there are regular coach excursions from Rocha Brava, hiring a car provides flexibility -enabling you to take things at your own pace: lingering at spots of particular personal interest, and quickly passing by those of lesser attraction.
And driving in The Algarve is a breeze: the highways and byways alike are well maintained (well, relatively) and â by UK standards – quiet.
Accordingly John has negotiated special terms with a local hire company, enabling Bondholders to have a car delivered to the site midway through their stay, which they may also return to the airport on their journey home, so saving on the return taxi transfer fee.
Flora and fauna
The Algarve is also a pleasure to explore on foot, more popular routes taking in the coastal paths to Sagres â with its highly regarded harbour side restaurants – the Monchique hills, the National Forest, the historical town of Lagos, and the Cape St. Vincent Natural Park (which remains undeveloped, maintaining the unique flora and fauna of the region).
Closer to home, there are pleasant walks from Rocha Brava itself. For instance, to Benagil, via the Praia Do Carvalho (which takes approximately two and a half hours at a leisurely pace). And across the cliffs to the close-by seaside town of Carvoeiro.
The latter route â which takes approximately an hour and a quarter – offers attractive scenery, and provides a pleasing alternative to the more direct three-mile roadside path.
The walk culminates in the heart of the bustling little coastal community, with its selection of bars, restaurants, shops and regular market.
Dolphin watching
Portuguese trains are, for the most part, regular and reliable: the (Alfa Pendular) fast train will propel you to the capital, Lisbon, in approximately two and a half hours. Prices are reasonable too: a first class return to the historic city costs around â’ 50.
The carriages are air conditioned and offer a bar service with light snacks, TV/video and spacious seating. What better way to experience to the full the attractive hinterland views â a luxury which is seldom permitted to âdesignated driversâ?
Lagos, too, is a short hop away by train, and well worth a visit. Here you may enjoy a constitutional along the promenade and around the marina, followed by a leisurely lunch.
While youâre there, be sure to visit the gold leafed Chapel and museum. Consider, also, taking the two-hour boat trip on The Bom Dia – which sails daily from Lagos to Ponta da Piedade, taking in the caves and wonderful rock formations along the coast.
Dolphin watching is also available here. Algarve Dolphinsâ guides â many of whom are highly trained marine biologists – use new, specially designed RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boats) to propel holidaymakers across the ocean in search of these most sociable and intelligent creatures.
Their trips depart hourly from Marina de Lagos, and usually last around 90 minutes.
Prices start from â’ 30 per person and – in the unlikely event that no dolphins are spotted â the company guarantees a second trip at no charge.
Moorish heritage
From boats to buses. There are regular services from Rocha Brava. In particular, John recommends a day out to Silves.
The journey takes around 40 minutes (with a change at Lagao) and drops you in the heart of the old Moorish capital, where youâll find an impressive castle commanding extraordinary views of the surrounding countryside.
There is also an archaeological museum, a fish, fruit and vegetable market every morning (except Sundays) and several restaurants and cafs in the town centre.
Silves is also home to the Fabrica do Ingls which â once a cork factory â is now a popular tourist centre featuring, amongst other things, a cork museum, restaurants and, in the summer months, nightly shows in the open air stage area.
Tenuous
The west coast offers more than sand and surf alone. At Cape St Vincent, Europeâs most south westerly point, you will find the fortress housing the famous âwind roseâ stone compass which, it is believed, was designed by Henry the Navigator.
This wild and windswept spot resonates with atmosphere. Yet, incredibly, it has none of the trappings of a tourist hub. The gift shop, for example, has long since closed down â leading one to question whether the Algarve people really make the very best of their heritage. (Most entrepreneurial are the handful of market traders â selling textiles, gifts and local produce – that youâll find lining the road to the car park and entrance.)
Over the last decade or so the fortress has attracted little or no financial support, and has been aided, in its battle against the elements, only by the kind of second rate paint job that one might more readily associate with an unloved municipal outbuilding.
Nonetheless, having passed through the old ruin, on your way to the far-most lighthouse, you quickly cast off that ghastly visage, as you pick your way through the scrub-grass paths, trying desperately to be heard over gale force winds as you marvel at the anglers perched precariously on the cliff side, a tenuous toehold separating them from the snapping surf that crashes a hundred or more boulder strewn feet below.
Gypsy market
In nearby Loul, Saturday is market day. Then, the fruit and vegetable market swells to twice its normal size, as the local farmers and producers set up shop outside the main market building. Here youâll find sides of smoked ham, home-made cheeses, sausages, fresh herbs, chickens, rabbits and other local fare.
By contrast, at the western end of the town, the weekly gipsy market features a mix of local handicrafts â including baskets, pottery, plants and linen – as well as, inevitably Levis, DVDs and video games (all of questionable provenance).
Olho, too, offers a superb covered market, as well as interesting shops in the pedestrianised area behind the port.
Time permitting, itâs worth continuing on from Olho to St Luzia, from where you may take a small open air train to Ilha de Tavira (Tavira Island), which is home to an attractive beach and medieval castle (the latter now classified as a National Monument).
Also popular are the regular excursions to Sir Cliff Richard’s winery – the Adega do Cantor â which is located at the Quinta do Miradouro. Here, a pre-booked tour and wine tasting costs just â’7.50 per person.
In Johnâs view, however, there are superior examples of the vintnerâs art to be had, courtesy of the regionâs Australian run vineyards.
Although Portugal is most famous for the fortified wine that bears its name, there are a range of reds and whites to meet the most discerning palate.
Water parks
If youâve never holidayed at The Algarve before you may â by now – have begun questioning any preconceived notions you may have held about the region, not least about its reputation for overt commercialism.
Youâll probably also wonder how weâve gotten this far without giving at least a nod to the primary source of that reputation: Albufeira. The fact is, however, that this one-time tourist centre isnât what it used to be. Itâs pleasant enough, if a little soulless; where once it was clearly vibrant it has become somewhat â down at heel.
Time was, crowds of locals and holidaymakers alike would assemble by the quayside as the fishing fleet returned home to enjoy the catch of the day – on the so-called Stripâs waterfront tables – fresh from the incoming boats. No more. The waterfront vendors have long since closed down, victims of ill-conceived âhealth and safetyâ legislation.
There are shops of course â and restaurants – which are fine. But with a finite window of holiday opportunity at your disposal there are better places to occupy your time. Not least, nearby Zoomarine, which provides a fun and informative day-out, allowing the whole family to experience (and even interact with) dolphins, seals and turtles â as well as sharks, crocodiles, alligators and tropical fish – in a reasonable facsimile of their native environment.
The park â whose stated aim is to âpromote environmental knowledge, preservation and education in a fun and exciting wayâ – is also home to a variety of birds of prey, and myriad animals and exhibits.
An enthralling falconry demonstration is held daily, as is an enchanting tropical bird show. But, inevitably, itâs the resident bottlenose dolphins that prove the greatest crowd pleasers – displaying their immense intelligence, and acrobatic prowess, to packed audiences throughout the day.
For an experience youâll never forget, you can also swim with the resident dolphins â for up to 90 minutes â in between shows (subject to pre-booking).
Also highly recommended is the parkâs â4Dâ cinema, which – through truly breathtaking animation âexplores the devastating consequences of global warming, deforestation and the destruction of ocean habitats, which Zoomarine contends represent the three greatest threats currently facing the natural world.
On a lighter note, the eight-hectare park also has a funfair – which includes free roller-coasters and rides for the children â together with a number of restaurants, shops, amusements and two large swimming pools, to help you cool off during your stay.
Long stays
Arguably the most popular holiday attraction on The Algarve, however, is Aqualand, the largest of the areaâs many water parks. Situated roughly 15 kms from Albufeira, the park has chutes and slides, waves and rides aplenty. Something, indeed, for the entire family (including those who would prefer a gentle swim, in the parkâs semi-Olympic pool).
Needless to say, Aqualand also offers a terrace caf and restaurant, and a gift shop – in other words, all youâll need to spend the entire day. Is it a tourist trap? Of course it is. Will the kids love it? Most certainly.
Prices are, for adults: â’ 18.50. For children (4 to 10 years): â’ 14.50.
Aqualand â like many local attractions â closes in the winter (from September to May). But this doesnât stop a raft of holidaymakers joining John and his colleagues all year round. Indeed, the site is invariably well booked with âlong-stayersâ between December and February.
In the best traditions of the HPB âclubâ, Holiday Property Bondholders visiting The Algarve during the cooler (wetter) winter months tend to make their own entertainment – arranging bridge tournaments, walks, bowling and boules. No golf, you say?
Well, usually not. Watching the relentless procession of golf bags rotating the airport luggage carousel, youâd expect more golfers to be resident on site. In reality, however – although there are a number of courses relatively close to Rocha Brava – keen golfers seeking superior (more challenging) courses tend to head further afield.
Johnâs long term second in command, English born Anne Martin, says, âAlthough we arrange a âgetting to know youâ evening at the start of each week – and of course provide all the help and facilities they need – for the most part our guests make their own arrangements, hosting regular cheese and wine evenings, dinners in and out, and so on.â
Relaxing pursuits all â and utterly in keeping with this most tranquil location, which it seems provides a refuge from the worst of the British weather, long after the beaches have been deserted.

The past is important because we learn from it. The past helps us navigate through our current choices in order to evolve our soul. We’re in soul school from the minute we hit the ground until we cross over; it’s coursework made possible by the enriching and sometimes challenging conditions we have chosen. We chart a learning program well before we get here, which includes our parents, our gender, and circumstances that will provide us with the greatest opportunity for personal and spiritual growth.
Where we get into trouble is giving up our freedom to make new choices based upon the present. Every day is new, no matter how you slice it. The sun comes up in spite of our mistakes or the despair we must face. But we are meant to continually move forward. Getting stuck in the past holds us behind, as prisoners within an incredible universe of opportunity. True empowerment stems from living now, not reacting to now from a mindset of the past or living with worry about what might happen tomorrow, next month, or next year. What can we do every day, no matter what has happened to in the past, to begin painting a positive life on a fresh, new canvas?
Classify the Past
The past is a collection of our emotions, experiences, and thought patterns as a result of living life. As adults, when we feel an emotion, it’s often based upon past experience. Life events trigger our emotional collection, and we interpret our current experiences through this lens. The problem is the value we take away from the past. When we allow only the good to shine through, we are able to live in the present. When we worry about the future, or agonize over the past, we are not fully engaged in life. The trick is to stay focused on your capabilities to address the present. View your past as a wonderful, robust course in life and stop agonizing over your mistakes or what someone said.
Examine Emotional Carryover
Changing a negative outlook takes a bit of discipline because you have to deeply resonate with the idea of what you want in the present moment, and accept it as already happening. When you attune to an idea, goal, or state of mind, you want to attract it now, not in the future. It takes a lot of self-reflection.
Do some simple mental housecleaning to discover if what you are feeling now is being embroidered upon by the past. If you’re discouraged, shift your thinking to the today setting and stop dredging up all sorts of feelings from the last twenty years about your parents, jobs that no longer matter, or even people who let you down. Release those people and circumstances and be free. If you carry so much heaviness, you’ll never get out from under water. The past is over. Do yourself a favor and lighten your load buoyancy guaranteed!
Be Inspired by Everyone
Life has many meanings but often we’ve got the definition backwards. As an exchange with others, life isn’t all about taking it in. It’s mostly about what you give out. This I know to be true, based upon my observations of many people who are critically ill yet have fantastic attitudes about sharing themselves with others.
If you visit a pediatric cancer ward, you will see children who are physically challenged beyond words but are still an inspiration to everyone around them. Despite their prognosis, their light shines bright with hope because they are living one day at a time. They seem illuminated and, thankfully, keep the rest of us going. Quite frankly, they are among the most inspirational people we have on earth, because they make everyone stop and think, If life can be good despite those circumstances, then why am I holding myself back? I believe part of their purpose is to give the rest of us a wake-up call to change our outlook. And if we find ourselves in the same boat, we too can keep everyone else going strong while we test our own abilities to stay in the present moment.
Release Fear and Self-Doubt
I think we are often fearful of believing we can have anything we want. When we look at the world, we see so much lack, unhappiness, war, starvation, pain, struggle, limitation. We begin to believe in it, and then we give those ideas power. With the number of people we see every day immersed in those conditions, it seems nearly impossible to trust that the normal human experience can be one of abundance, joy, peace, fulfillment, health, and ease. We’ve been told since childhood that nothing’s perfect. Nothing is worse than this type of programming, because we’re never going to realize our full human potential until we release our former ideas of what is possible. Life is a beautiful, perfect, glorious miracle. We choose our situations, our families, our painful experiences in order to evolve.
As we observe the full range of everything from despair to triumph, we see the huge opportunity that exists to make change. Despair challenges our perception of what can be. With fear and self-doubt in our toolkit, our capability to produce change is diminished. In the big picture, life is perfect because it is giving us room to grow. A little bad weather makes us sturdier. We need the rain, and even a cold winter solidifies us, making us more receptive to spring. But, sure as anything, we are going to grow despite our circumstances. There should be no fear of growth. We should be proud of surviving, overcoming, beating the odds, not living in fear of more to come, and especially proud of not dragging ourselves down, together with those around us, with emotions like fear and self-doubt that do nothing but keep us in the dark.
Consciously Create Your Day
Over the years, I have experimented with ways to release the past and move forward, living life in the present moment. I’ve noticed that when I start my day without any clear direction of how I choose to think, I don’t get the results I want. I used to spend years regurgitating old problems. Without establishing my expectations of the universe as to how I desired my day to unfold, I discovered I would replay those same issues over and over again. So I began to make a supreme effort to move disappointments, loss, and feelings of non-success farther from my mind each day.
Now, before I get up in the morning, I lie in bed for a few minutes and create my day by using a series of affirmative statements that are designed to do three things: they are positive, present-moment statements about what is, not what will be; they address some element of my life that needs improvement; and they get me to completely identify with the power within to manifest my circumstances. To manifest means to bring into our immediate experience, and make that which is created by the mind into a tangible or observable reality. The power is derived from spirit, or the Divine, which pervades every inch of the universe. To achieve this goal, I say my affirmative statements with love, grateful to be alive and to have my chosen learning opportunities. Then I focus on being open to positive change.
I also visualize life being unfolded to me in creative ways and ask the universe to show me its perfection in ways I would not expect. I make a point of saying this because I think we can better understand the co-creative relationship we have with spirit when we release overly specific intentions and let the power of our own thoughts return to us in ways that give us feedback on our desires. When mentally creating my day in the morning, I’ve had new people walk off the street and become my employees because I saw a need in our organization. Abundance has arrived in the form of revenue streams I did not expect. When I see myself as a co-creator of the universe each day, I’ve attracted great results.
Remember, when you release the past, consciously create your day, and have the mental discipline to think positive, you’ll see results. Through constant awareness (aligning with powerful and positive ideas) you’ll begin to see a difference. A big part of conscious awareness and living in the present moment is about being open to the feedback the environment is providing. Be open to positive change and deeply love life. Be perceptive and positive!

Go to Hell: A Heated History of the Underworld By Chuck Crisafulli and Kyra Thompson $12.99 Close your eyes and picture — just for a moment — hell. Fire? Demons? Eternal torment?
Well, yes — that’s the place, in one very hot nutshell. But that’s not all there is to the forbidding world beneath us. For a few millennia now, we mortals have imagined and reimagined hell in countless ways: as a realm of damnation, as an inspiration for highest art, as a setting for the lowest of lowbrow comedy. One might conclude that for all our good intentions to enter para- dise, we can’t seem to get enough vivid details of its counterpart, hell.
Provocative, colorful, and damned entertaining, Go to Hell takes readers on a tour of the underworld that is both darkly comical and seriously informative. From the frozen hell of the Vikings to the sun-drenched Cayman Islands’ town of Hell (where tourists line up to have their postcards aptly postmarked), from Dante’s circles of hell to Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Hellmouth, Go to Hell embraces our evolving relationship with the sinner’s final destination, revealing how we truly think of ourselves in this world.
What’s down below?
Meet HEL, the hideous, half-rotting goddess of the Viking underworld.
Beware the Egyptians’ AM-MUT, an unsightly mix of lion, crocodile, and hippo parts, and insatiably hungry for wicked souls.
Visit JIGOKU, a Buddhist realm of eight fiery hells and eight icy hells: an all-you-can-suffer hot-and-cold buffet.
Step into the INFERNO for a tour of Dante’s nine circles of the damned… |

Jealous Gods And Chosen People $19.35 Here, David Leeming offers the first comprehensive narrative study of the mythology of the Middle East. Leeming offers an in-depth discussion of the mythology of the region, covering individual pantheons, cosmic myths, mythic heroes, and much more. He ranges from prehistoric figures such as the Mother Goddess of Catal Huyuk to Mesopotamian gods such as Marduk and mythic heroes such as Gilgamesh, to the pantheon of Egyptian mythology, including the falcon-headed sky-sun god Horus and jackal-headed Anubis. The author also offers an illuminating exploration of the mythology of the three great monotheistic religions of the region: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In a provocative Epilogue, Leeming notes that fundamentalists in the area’s three religions all see their way as the only way, forgetting that myths represent truths that are spiritual and philosophical–not historical events that can be used to justify acts of violence. With key maps, illustrations, bibliography, and index, Jealous Gods and Chosen People provides an inclusive, authoritative, and captivating account of a mythology that remains a potent–and often destructive–force in the world today. |
