Following the seasons in the Lake District   by Sally Fielding

Everyone knows that the Lake District is beautiful. Each season has its own character, so no two visits would ever be the same. There is an abundance of self catering Lake District cottages to help enhance your visit. Here are some of our seasonal favourites…

Spring

Magical walks through bluebell-carpeted woods, spotting wood sorrel as its flowers rotate to follow the sun throughout the day; golden celandines; wild garlic with its starry white flowers; jolly primroses and frothy dog’s mercury. Try Wallabarrow Woods in the Duddon Valley, Dodd Wood near Keswick, Johnny’s Wood in Borrowdale or the Brandlehow Wood at Derwentwater.

Head to Ullswater to catch Wordsworth’s famous Daffodills: ‘I wandered lonely as a Cloud/That floats on high o’er Vales and Hills/When all at once I saw a crowd/ A host of dancing Daffodills’. They were inspired by a walk taken by Wordsworth’s sister, Dorothy, in April 1802.

While you’re in the Ullswater area, take a frosty walk up Aira Force. When the waterfall still has it’s post-winter volume, but before the tree canopy has closed overhead in spring, it’s a really magical sight.

Words by the Water is a quality literary festival held at Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake each March. Last year’s crop of speakers included the popular novelist Penelope Lively; Man-Booker shortlisted local girl, Sarah Hall; historian Ian Mortimer and comic broadcaster Stuart Maconie. 2011′s headliners include Joanna Trollope, Claire Tomalin, Gervase Phinn and Justine Picardie.

Cumbria’s stately homes and castles re-open in the Spring. Try Muncaster Castle on the west coast; Mirehouse, at Bassenthwaite; Brantwood, overlooking Coniston Water; Hutton-in-the-Forest, north of Penrith and Holker Hall, at Cark-in-Cartmel.

Spring is lambing season, from tiny white Rough Fell lambs in February to black-as-pitch Herdwicks in May. The first one is a sight to report, but within a month the fields are heaving with little bleaters.

There is always a good selection of Easter events including the Great Peter Rabbit Egg Hunt, a large-scale event covering the entire Lake Distrct. A hundred eggs, with vouchers for prizes, are hidden in tourist hot-spots. The event is over when all the eggs are found!
The Keswick Mountain Festival takes place in May, with a combination of guided activities, competitions and talks. It was particularly good last year, so we have high hopes for 2011.

Summer

Summer is walking season. Anywhere. Everywhere. There are so many lovely places to walk, from mountains, to river valleys, to conifer forests , indigenous deciduous woods, the Cumbria Coastal Path and the Coast-to-Coast walk. Have a crack at the Woolpack Round, a sixteen-mile circular walk from the Woolpack Inn in Eskdale which includes Scafell Pike, the highest point in England. We love to amble along the Derwent in Borrowdale or the Esk in Eskdale.

Experienced climbers will head for Great Gable and Napes Needle the birth of British rock climbing at Wasdale, for a challenging climb unencumbered by hoards of visitors. Beginner? Take a few lessons with Tim Mosedale.

A bright Lake District day is perfect for a picnic. Pick a spot by Devoke Water or Blea Tarn; Derwentwater is always lovely, and easy to get to with pushchairs and wheelchairs; Ennerdale is blissfully quiet; by the medieval bridge over the Derwent at Grange, whilst the kids have a paddle, or there’s my favourite: under the shadow of the Bowder Stone in Borrowdale.

With all these calm lakes about, why not try your hand at sailing, rowing, or canoeing? Hire craft and take lessons at Derwent marina.

You can swim in the lakes, or, if you’re at our lovely quiet west coast, a dip in the sea at the MCS-approved waters at Seascale and St. Bees Head. Whilst you’re in the area, take a bracing cliff-top walk at St. Bees and spot thousands of rare black guillemots, and masses of kittiwakes, razorbills, fulmars, linnets and rock pipits.

Don’t miss the ospreys in Dodd Wood, above Bassenthwaite. Every year, between April and August, there is a special viewing point where you can see the new chicks being fed, and the adult birds soaring over the lake, fish in beak. There is even a webcam in season.

There are lots of festivals throughout the summer, including the Keswick Beer Festival and Boot Beer Festival in Eskdale. I have it on good advice that there’s excellent beer to go with the music at the annual Cockermouth Rock Festival, affectionately known as ‘Cock Rock’. Last year’s headline acts were Dodgy and 80′s favourite, Sham 69.

The agricultural show season kicks off too at Cockermouth, Coniston, Penrith, Ambleside, Cartmel, Hawkshead and Grasmere.

Autumn

Autumn in the Lake District is often gorgeous. There are a lot of native deciduous trees here, which rust gently from September to November into lovely shades of gold, red, russet and brown. My favourite place to take in the show is a bench on the eastern shore of Derwentwater, with Brandelhow Wood on the opposite shore, reflected in the lake. Take a camera and a flask!

This is foraging season, too. Pick some blackberries (always called brambles hereabouts!) for a pie (always known as a ‘plate cake’ hereabouts!) from any wooded area or hedgerow. In October, look out for sloes – fat, purple berries

When Reece from PingZine handed me this assignment and told me I was interviewing Rob Malda I pretended to be excited and nodded my head knowingly while he educated me on Rob’s background.

Honestly, I had no clue who Rob was. I guess that’s because I live in my own little Web Hosting and Reality TV worldâ€but then I heard the magic word: SLASHDOT!

Just like Lois Lane I was determined to get to the guts of this story to find out something nobody knows about Rob Malda. There has to be some edge, something I can bring to this story that will have people gasping at my ingenious and crafty interviewing techniquesâ€

I know!! I’ll lure him into a relaxed and welcoming environment and then when he least expects it, I’ll hammer him with a question so volatile, the LP attorneys will question if it is even worth publishing my exploze (yes, that’s right, ex-plo-ze: exploding expos).

Amy: So Rob, hi, how are ya? Nice weather we’re having huh? Love your shoes btw â€

Rob: 85 Degrees and Humid as hell. Stupid October. Not going outside. And I’m not wearing shoes: Get a new prescription!

[*gasp]

Amy: I’ve been doing a bunch of reading about you and your achievements so I’m thinking we should track back to your teens where it all began..

[Gawd I sound like a therapist]

Were you a Star Wars fan?

Rob: Indeed. I still routinely record them when they air on TV and watch them if they air in high-def. In college my roommate and I watched the entire trilogy every weekend for an entire year.

Amy: You play Dungeons and Dragons? Ummmâ€why? Did you ever get into WOW or Everquest?

Rob: Yes. We have a bi-weekly D&D campaign. My current char’s name is Bonzer Xylophone, an undead ranger. It’s just an excuse to drink beer and eat cookies. Last week we had fondue. I played a fair bit of EQ and tons of WOW. I have 4 level 70s now actually, although I haven’t logged in for months. I just like games with XP. I like making the numbers go up, and the monsters go splat.

Amy: I was reading in your bio that as a child your mother’s favorite punishment was to take away your keyboard and lock it in her trunk. The story on how you got around that cracked me up (Rob added a keyboard error code check to his autoexec.bat file which launched a BBS making it possible to get the data from a friend’s house). It got me thinking about children online nowadays and the traps and filters we put in place to protect/monitor their online activities. Are we deluding ourselves thinking that by checking their history and adding some filters to Google, blocking MySpace etc we can stop them?

Rob: Absolutely delusional.

[Wow†did he just call me delusional?]

Rob: Kids are smart and every generation is more tech savvy than the last. The truth is that the higher the wall you build, the harder the kid will work to see what is on the other side. Better build a picket fence and just talk to the kid about what’s on the other side of it. Instead we just try to sue everyone who creates something that we might not want a kid to see. It’s sad.

Amy: You were a hyperactive kid. What other trouble did you get yourself into? Come on, spill it.

Rob: Once we started a fire under a bridge near the local high school. It got pretty big and I panicked and so we filled a cardboard box with water from a nearby creek and dragged it back to the burning fire. Most of the water leaked out of the cardboard (not the best vessel for water distribution mind you) and dumped it on the blazing inferno. The steam & smoke that billowed out from under the bridge stopped traffic for as far as the eye could see, right as school was letting out. It was awesome. I was probably 10.

Amy: Your first job was working as a PC tech guy and you mastered Windows and then the heavens opened and an angelic penguin whispered â€Linux†in your ear. Tells us how that experience transitioned you into cyberspace.

Rob: Linux came into my life because I was a CS major who was required to do homework on SUN Sparcstations running UNIX. Linux let me work at home. Plus it made internet easy (even on a 14.4k modem) and really showed me why windows was the wrong way to work.

Amy: I happened to â€drop†your name to some development guys I know and the conversation went something like this:

Dev Guy: â€Sup Ames? You look very beautiful and glamorous today as usualâ€

Amy: â€Oooooh nothing much really, just writing up some questions for ROB MALDA THE CREATOR OF SLASHDOTâ€

Dev Guy: â€Omg omg omg omg! Like totally no way!†(Valley Girl style)

And, after they stopped squealing like chicks they asked me to ask you if you use any open source software on Slashdot and how is it setup?

Rob: Pretty much everything on Slashdot is open source. MySQL. Perl. Apache. Even our own code is all open source and available at www.slashcode.com. It’s set up like software usually is: on hard drives inside computers. We plug those into various plugs on walls, some give us electricity and others give us packets. And all is well.

Amy: Also.. What are some tips & tricks for managing a high-traffic site?

Rob: Cache. Cache. Cache. If you can make it in advance, do it. Most people don’t need any customization, so make the page once and give the next 10,000 people the same page.

Amy: Oh and ASL?

Rob: I don’t know American sign language. I barely speak English.

[Pffft ya newbie]

Amy: You created SlashDot and yes, I wish I had the same idea. Are you uber rich now? Did you sell the site to some massive conglomerate and retire at the age of 21 to your own island?

Rob: I am not uber rich, but I did get to buy my first house at like 23. Still haven’t paid of the mortgage though. And while we did sell to corporate overlords, I’m 31 and still nowhere near retirement or an island.

Amy: Any regrets on selling?

Rob: Like anything, it’s a mixed bag. I like having health insurance and a 401k. But running a media company inside a publicly traded corporation is a unique set of challenges.

Amy: SlashTips †I mentioned earlier nothing I have ever written was published on SlashDot (I guess they don’t appreciate my unique style and humor). What do you look for when approving Slash-missions?

Rob: Maybe you’re just trying to hard.

[Yup that must be it]

Amy: Rob is married to a gorgeous gal named Kathleen and they got married Vegas style. Tell us how you met!

Rob: An old girlfriend and I set her up with a friend of mine, and somehow neither relationship lasted. Worked out well for everyone.

Amy: SlashCats †How many cats do you and Kathleen have Rob? Are you a cat-a-holic?

Rob: In order of age they are Pixel, Dante, Matrix, and Sushi. We could probably stand to have a few die off- but I had 2 and she had 2 and then it was all Brady Bunch and we were stuck with a herd. But they are ours and we love them even when they puke strange colored fuzzy objects on the carpet.

Amy: On weekends I love to go to yard sales and buy random junk in the hope that I will make millions with that one treasure†What do you do in your downtime that doesn’t involve plugging something into a power socket?

Rob: Go to movies. Learn to cook. Go to interesting restaurants. Travel. Play Video Games. Watch the season premiere of Heroes.

Amy: For the web hosting freaks, tell us about the server set up when you first started SlashDot and the situation now?

Rob: DEC Alpha Multia/166 running Red Hat plugged into a T1. Now we have a dozen dual cpu webheads, 4 Quad cpu databases, and a few other random helper boxes, and are plugged into an OC3.

Amy: What is the next challenge or project for you, Rob?

Rob: You mean after surviving this interview? Finding shoes†Stop looking at my toes.

Summer holidays are not the only time of year when we should take notice of sun protection products, because the UK has seen some very sunny days at out-of-season times. Parents should be clued up about UV (ultra violet) protection because children need extra protection from the sun’s rays, even in the shade.

Sun lotion products

The Karen Clifford Skin Cancer Charity warns that there were 8900 new cases of malignant melanoma reported in 2004 in the UK – the seventh most common cancer. However, among 20-39-year-olds, it is the second most common cancer, with men being affected mostly on the torso while women are mostly affected on their legs.

The charity reports that rates of malignant melanoma in the UK have increased almost five times in males and have more than tripled in females, over the past 25 years.

CONFUSING ADVICE

Two key areas of advice conflict, depending on what you read. These relate to the reapplication of sun screen and whether you need to wear it in the shade.

The Netdoctor website, for example, says, “If the child is not exposed to direct sunlight, sunscreen is not usually necessary.” This advice is misleading when you consider the likes of the Karen Clifford charity and Nivea say sun protection should be worn even in the shade.

Be wary, also, of claims by sun protection companies that say you shouldn’t need to reapply sun lotion once you have put it on. This is very bad advice because sun lotions can wear off with sweat and water and it needs to be reapplied regularly.

KEY FACTS YOU MUST KNOW

* Many sun protection products are designed to protect against UV-B (which causes sunburn) but they don’t protect against UV-A (which can also cause skin cancer). Look for newer products containing the UV-A and UV-B protection.
* Children need additional protection because their skin’s ability to regenerate is still developing, and while skin cancer among children is rare, skin cancer develops over many years of exposure to the sun.
* Most people don’t put on enough sun protection. You should apply generous amounts at least 20 minutes before you go out, and then reapply every two hours while you are outside.
* Most daylight hours are dangerous times, and you should keep to the shade whenever possible – especially children. Cancer Research states quite simply that if your shadow is shorter than your height, you are at risk of burning.
* Shade and water do not protect you from UV rays, which are still present in shade and can penetrate water as far down as a metre or even more.
* Small children should always be kept in the shade, and sunscreen should still be applied.
* You should always use at least an SPF 15 product but SPF30 is commonly recommended as a safer minimum.
* You will not tan any less if you use a higher SPF, but it will just take longer.
* Make sure you are aware of conversion of SPF numbers. We’ve seen claims that American SPF numbers are double that in Europe – so if you buy an SPF 30 product in the USA, you will actually be buying what would be an SPF 15 in the UK. However, we haven’t corroborated this definitively so we don’t know if it’s true, although you can play safe by buying your products in the UK before you leave.
* One important note to bear in mind. If you go on holiday with a family of four and only one bottle of sun cream and you have some left when you get back, you haven’t used anywhere near enough.
* Even on cloudy days, you are exposed to around 50 per cent of the UV-A and UV-B rays that you get in direct sunlight.

DOES SUNBURN INDICATE A HIGHER RISK OF CANCER?

Getting sunburnt doesn’t mean you are a higher skin cancer risk, but repeated and prolonged sunburn could be a factor. Skin cancer generally develops over years of exposure to UV-A and UV-B, and whether your skin gets red through burning or not on your holiday is less of an indication than how frequently you are exposed. This is one of the key reasons why children need extra protection, and because they like to run around on the beach or at the pool, they are likely to be exposed for much of their holiday.

How to deal with sunburn

Always consult a doctor if a small child or baby has been sunburnt, or if blisters or a rash appear.

Consider calamine lotion to cool burned skin. You can also cool the skin with tepid water for about half an hour.

Don’t let the child get cold.

CHOOSING AND APPLYING SUNSCREEN

Banana Boat Kids StickThe Karen Clifford Skin Cancer Charity says, “The average-sized adult should apply at least a teaspoon of sunscreen to each arm, leg, front of body and back of body and at least helf a teaspoon to the face (including the ears and neck). That is, 35 ml of sunscreen for one full body application.”

Whether you use lotion that you pour out, spray out or rub on (in the case of the BananaBoat Kids Stick pictured), the key factor is the protection and the ingredients. Definitely look for both UV-B and UV-A protection.

Consider an organic product, compare labels to find those without alcohol, check for a high SPF number for children and a product that is specifically designed for children – these will have less irritants. BananaBoat’s Tear Free sprays and lotions are a good example. How To Choose The Right Contemporary Ligting   by Bruce Shaw

When redecorating a room, or even an entire house, contemporary lighting is a major concern. Dimly lit areas are uninviting and even depressing since human beings naturally crave the light. Some rooms, of course, invite subdued lighting … a bedroom doesn’t need glaring light whereas a dramatic entryway or living room might be stunning with bold, dramatic spotlight.

The older the home, the greater the challenge when planning for modern lighting. Here are twelve issues to contemplate when planning your lighting update.

1. Consider your natural lighting first. In what direction are your windows facing? Northern light is usually cooler and whiter whereas daylight from southern-facing windows will be warmer and yellower. This is perfect for plants, but not as satisfactory to artists, who prefer the truer white of the north. Northern light is a more even hue and is more shadow-free, which isn’t as comfortable in a relaxing den.

2. How is the light affected by your architecture and landscaping? Do you have trees that shade the light, or bushes that block the lower parts of the windows and decrease the over-all quantity of illumination? Does a roofline cast a shadow in an important area of a room? Can you increase the quality and quantity of accessible light without spending a fortune?

3. What activities take place in your rooms? Do some of them require more light than others? A desk that hosts homework or needlework requires strong and steady light that covers the entire work area. However, someone relaxing on a recliner and watching TV at the end of a busy day does not want this kind of focused brightness.

4. Do you need variable lighting? You might require a bright light focused on a dining room table while it is being set and dinner is served. However, once all diners are seated and have loaded their plates, a softer lighting is more appropriate and a dimmer switch will nicely provide for multiple intensities.

5. Are there details in your room upon which you wish to focus attention? Perhaps you own a spectacular fireplace or exceptional art? In that case, spot lighting might be appropriate. There might be other necessary, but not-so-attractive areas, that you might wish to downplay by muting the light. Or you might own a spectacular view that is especially enchanting at night. In that case, lights reflecting from the windows will make it more difficult, or even impossible, to see out.

6. Can you add light to a room by changing your decorating scheme? We recently brightened a dark-paneled den by painting all the woodwork and cabinets a creamy white and adding 2″ white wood blinds. With this relatively simple change, the entire room has taken on an entirely new appearance and brightened dramatically.

7. How do your window treatments affect the light? Some homes with heavy drapes are either “on” or “off”: that is, either the drapes are closed, making the room dark and frequently gloomy, or they are open and sunlight isn’t filtered in any way. Blinds or certain shades can diffuse light while still allowing a large percentage of it to access and brighten a room.

8. Decorating features in your home may add light or take it away. For instance, a mirror will add a sense of spaciousness and illumination whereas outside shutters or awnings may block the sun’s rays. It might be wonderful to shut out harsh sunlight on a 95 degree summer day, but in the middle of winter we want every sliver of light we can grab.

9. What about the natural traffic pattern of your room? A floor lamp placed so that people must detour around it isn’t the wisest use of your light sources. Is an off/on switch conveniently located near all entrances? Groping around on the wall in the dark isn’t favored by most people. If this is your situation, a simple sensor that turns on lights when a human enters a room is a clever solution.

10. Which areas are underlit and which are overlit? In my bedroom, for example, there is an exceedingly bright overhead light as part of a ceiling fan. It is great when finding an appropriate color of socks to wear in the morning, but completely unsuitable for reading in bed before going to sleep. A pool table needs strong lighting whereas a romantic seating area in a garden room does not.

11. What kind of lighting does your room need? Fluorescent fixtures might be perfect above a kitchen island but would be repulsive directly above an eating area. Schools and other institutions might welcome such unflattering lighting, but incandescent lighting might be more appropriate at home.

12. What is the condition of your wiring? Old and outdated wiring often cannot accommodate sleek new lighting systems without some work. Updating wiring can be expensive and disruptive, but it is also the opportunity to add new switches and cause updates for new computers, high speed Internet connections or high-tech TV or sound systems.

If you consider all these situations before spending a single penny updating to more contemporary lighting, your end result is certain to be more satisfying to everyone who lives in your home.
