Water Lilies by Carolen

As the rose to the flower garden, so is the Water Lily to our lakes and ponds. In the summer stillness of some reed fringed backwater, the crowning note of beauty will be found in a fleet of Lilies moored by hidden cables. Who can forget the sight of the creamy cups sparkling with the morning dew, as the sun scatters the dawn mists from the surface of some placid lake? Or in the blue mystery of night, when the folded flowers shine like silver lamps to guide our boats through the shadows.

If water gardens existed for the sake of this one flower, they would be worth all the love and labor in our power to give.

And yet Water Lilies are much neglected. For them it is worth clearing and cleaning the hundreds of weed grown ponds. Small tanks and tubs might be prepared, the possession of even a few square feet of water surface should be an excuse for growing plants of the hardy kinds.

Perhaps the fallacy that Water Lilies, as a family, are extremely delicate, is difficult to disprove. The fact that they flower freely in lakes and ponds,which in winter are thickly covered with ice, should in itself be sufficient to dispel any such prejudice. Certain varieties require warm and sheltered quarters, but even in exposed situations the available list is by no means small.

In spite of the beauty of flower and leaf as displayed, Water Lilies owe much of their charm to suitable surroundings and graceful grouping.

On natural pieces of water they should always be planted close in-shore, so that they may be appreciated without trouble from the bank. A sheltered bay, surrounded by flowering reeds and with wooded margins, would be an ideal spot for a few good patches. Sunshine is essential, but in an exposed position they rarely look their best. Absolute tranquillity seems necessary in order to realise their full charm, on the mirrored surface of a sunlit pool, each bloom stands out clear cut and delicate.

There is something in the sculptured form of this flower that particularly fits it for association with water gardens of a formal type. In large places the possession of a small Lily Court, with sunk tank and enclosing walls of masonry, will provide a picture of supreme beauty.

An advantage of tanks over ponds and streams, consists in the ease with which the plants may be looked after. Not only can growth be curtailed and overcrowding checked, but the roots may be furnished with just enough soil as is conducive to healthy development and free flowering. In many cases the mud in ponds and lakes is poor, improvement in this direction being difficult, if not impossible. As a consequence, the crop of bloom decreases annually, whilst leaf growth is correspondingly coarse and rampant.

As a rule the more vigorous growers should be reserved for ponds and open water, as the Lily petioles should be allowed to attain their full length, and the plants are impatient of too much restraint. The smaller kinds will thrive in tanks and tubs, with a depth of two to three feet of water. In case of frost, it is advisable that the crowns shall be at least twelve inches below the surface during the winter.

The best time for planting is April or May, at which time the tubers can be obtained from nurseries and specialists. For planting in the open, it is sufficient to tie the roots to a fair-sized stone or piece of iron piping, lowering them into suitable quarters near the pond side. If the mud bottom is of only slight depth, or clay puddling has been resorted to, the roots should be supplied with some strong loam in which to strike. An easy way is to pack them in soil in old baskets, lowering them into position, by the time the baskets have rotted, the roots will have fastened themselves securely into the mud.

In artificial tanks and tubs the bottom can be covered with a foot of good loamy soil mixed with manure before the water is admitted. Planting under such conditions is easy and certain. A thorough cleaning of the sides and brickwork should always precede Lily planting, as old neglected tanks are generally foul and dirty.

As Glastonbury celebrates their 41styear †the spring/summer festival season is almost upon us. Moving into May, June, July and August we can look forward to gatherings such as Glastonbury, T in the Park, Wireless, Bestival, Latitude, Isle of White, Lovebox, Sonisphere, V, Leeds, Reading and Creamfields. If you’re lucky enough to have tickets to a festival this year, you’re almost certainly thinking about shopping and packing already. My Vintage brings you this one stop guide bursting with our expert advice on this years key trends and great tips for perfect festival fashion!

We’re hoping that you’ve already sorted the boring things like a tent, sleeping bag, pocket knife, painkillers, toilet roll, toothbrush and sunscreen, so what do you need to glam yourself up and stand out from the crowd?

The first thing you need has got to be a backpack †a large army surplus type pack is ideal for travelling to and from the event but each day you’re there you need to carry your essential supplies (water, baby wipes, lip gloss and camera!) Pretty designer handbags just aren’t great in fields, so shop around for a vintage rucksack or duffel bag or go retro with a bright coloured or printed pack.

Whatever your height, shape or size, you cannot set off for any festival this year without a maxi dress. Available in a rainbow of colours, plain or printed, in long sleeved, halter-neck or strapless styles. Go for cotton in the heat, although some of the brighter bolder prints are better on synthetic fabrics.

Headgear is also a must in the sun, go for floppy vintage sun-hats or straw trilbys. Baseball caps and bandannas should be avoided at all costs! And of course you need a pair of sunglasses. Look for bold retro coloured frames, or of course Wayfarers or Ray Bans. Footwear needs to be comfortable. A pair of funky animal print wellies will see you through when the rain hits but for the rest of the time, take gladiators and pumps but don’t be afraid to wear plimsolls with ankle socks for uber cool chic and comfort.

So that’s the basic covered, you’ve got your vintage toggle bag, vintage maxi dress, vintage sunglasses, vintage trilby hat and a pair of wellies! Now lets look at some great trends that will have you on the style-spotted pages of the glossies in no time!

Feathers †whether it’s a headband, necklace or hem, feathers in a variety of colours and lengths are a great summer trend. Look for vintage pieces and high street stores for mix and match splashes.

AquaBlue †a big summer colour, go for accessories, pumps, leggings and eye make up in stunning underwater aqua blue!

Fringing †great on cotton tees, fringe them yourself or buy them ready done! Fringing is also great on boots, bags and jackets. Think cowboys and indians!

Playsuits †the playsuit just keep coming back. Pastel florals are ideal, so look for vintage playsuits for more retro prints and better cuts. Strappy or short sleeved is best and buttons are better than zips in most cases.

Sequins †just because you’re slumming it doesn’t mean you can’t dazzle! Look for sequin covered seperates like boob tubes, miniskirts, skinny scarves or waistcoats and layer up with utility wear for real grunge chic.

Hareem Trousers †great in nude shades, cuffed at the ankle with fitted waist and baggy legs, these eastern inspired trousers are a must have. Team with vest top and trusty gladiators for comfort and effortless style.

Floral Scarf †it’s got to be floral, it’s got to be beautiful, it’s got to be a vintage scarf. Look for pure silk if your purse can cope. If not, a faux silk or polyester will do the trick! Team pastels with denim and charcoal greys for a chic vintage summer image.

Animal Print †whether it’s a pair of Fearne’s Converse or a tight body stocking, a little bit of jungle print should definitely be making an appearance in your festival wardrobe. But don’t over do it or you’ll wind up looking tacky.

So there we have it, be prepared and do your research. Don’t be afraid to mix high street, handmade, designer and vintage †create the perfect eclectic collection for your summer of love!

Tight liquidity and high inflation impact income funds performance by CRISIL

Income funds were the worst performers in the debt fund category during the quarter ended December 2010, as per the latest CRISIL Mutual Fund Ranking. This was on account of a hardening of short-term yields due to the prevailing tight liquidity situation and expectation of a rise in inflation. Income funds gave a return of 0.84% during the quarter as compared to 1.4% in gilt funds and 1.71% in liquid funds.

Income funds, which invest a majority of their portfolio in short- and medium-term instruments, were adversely affected on account of interest rates hardening towards the short end of the yield curve. The average daily Liquidity Adjustment Facility during the quarter was higher at Rs 900-1,000 billion, indicating tight liquidity conditions. Cash available with the banking system was also constrained, leading to a rise in interbank rates, which touched a high of 8% on October 29. According to Tarun Bhatia, Director – Capital Markets, â€Yield on the one-year Certificate of Deposit firmed up by 145 basis points during the quarter and credit spreads across maturities widened as corporate bond yields hardened more than the yields on government securities. While this negatively impacted the performance of income funds, the short-term debt categories benefited.†CRISIL Fund Rank 1 income funds had an average of 26% exposure to short- and medium-term instruments as compared to 37% for CRISIL Fund Rank 5 income funds.

Among fund houses, HDFC Mutual Fund continued to lead the tally of top ranked funds across equity and debt categories with a total of 17 funds under CRISIL Fund Rank 1 as compared to 16 in the previous quarter. DSP BlackRock Mutual Fund and Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund followed with a total of six funds each under CRISIL Fund Rank 1.

A unique feature of CRISIL Mutual Fund Ratings is that unlike most other ranking models that are purely based on returns or net asset value (NAV), CRISIL Mutual Fund Rankings uses a combination of NAV and portfolio-based attributes for evaluation.
