Therapeutic Sun Lamps Depression

Lighting – Medicine of the Best Future by AmitMalhotra

As researchers isolate the specific part of the sun’s spectrum that is related to health and well-being, we could eventually create the perfect indoor environment with artificial lighting, until then it’s Vita-Lite. Based on the research of Hollwich and others, the cool-white fluorescent bulb is legally banned in German hospitals and medical facilities. Most offices, stores, hospitals, and schools currently use cool-white fluorescent!

Full Vs. Incomplete Spectrum Lighting

“In 1980, Dr. Fritz Hollwich conducted a study comparing the effects of sitting under strong artificial cool-white (non-full spectrum) illumination versus the effects of sitting under strong artificial illumination that simulates sunlight (full-spectrum). Using changes in the endocrine system to evaluate these effects, he found stress like levels of ACTH an cortisol (the stress hormones) in individuals in sitting under the cool-white tubes. These changes were totally absent in the individuals sitting under the sunlight-simulating tubes.

The significance of Hollowich’s findings becomes clear when the functions of ACTH and cortisol are examined. Both of these metabolic hormones play major roles in the functioning of the entire body and are very much related to stress response. Since their activity increases inhibitors, this may account for the observation that persistent stress stunts bodily growth in children. Hollowich’s findings clarify and substantiate the observations of Ott and others regarding the agitated physical behavior, fatigue, and reduced mental capabilities of children. He concluded that the degree of biological disturbance and the resulting behavioral mal adaptations were directly related to the difference between the spectral composition of the artificial source and that of natural light.

Since cool-white fluorescent lamps are especially deficient in the red and blue-violet ends of the spectrum, this may explain why color therapists have historically used a combination of the colors red and blue-violet as an emotional stabilizer. Hollwich’s work not only confirms the biological importance of full-spectrum lighting, but it also reconfirms the importance of specific colors by evaluating the effects of their omission from our daily lives. Based on the research of Hollwich and others, the cool-white fluorescent bulb is legally banned in German hospitals and medical facilities. It has been found that full-spectrum lighting in the work place creates significantly lower stress on the nervous system than standard cool-white fluorescent lighting and reduces the number of absences due to illness. These findings seem to indicate that full-spectrum lighting may act to boost the immune system in the same way as natural sunlight. Shedding Light on Those Winter Blues

Does your spirit wanes with the shortening of days? You may be suffering from sunlight withdrawal. The syndrome appears with inevitable regularity. As summer pales into autumn, the victim feels an ominous sense of anxiety and foreboding at the mere thought of approaching winter. As days shorten from November into December, there’s a gradual slowing down, a low of energy, a need for more and more sleep, a longing to lie undisturbed in bed.

It becomes harder to get to work, to accomplish anything when there. Depression and withdrawal follow. As a Brooklyn, New York, woman described it, “Everything seems gloomier and more difficult. There is sadness looming over everything. I can’t concentrate at work and feel like going home afterward to hibernate like a bear.”

Just as routinely, as spring approaches and days stretch out, the sufferer flips into high gear.”Once the warm weather arrives, I feel a burden lifted,” says the Brooklynite. “I feel freer and happier.”

This is more than a dislike of icy slush and raw winds. Psychiatric researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) have identified these complaints as a previously unrecognized clinical syndrome. They call its victims “winter depressives.” “It is much more common than we thought,” says Dr. Norman Rosenthal of NIMH. “We expected to get a few replies from our description of this pattern. Instead, we received more than three thousand responses from all over the country. The symptoms described were one after the other very much the same.

“Some of these winter depressives are being successfully treated, not with drugs or psychotherapy but with an element common to all our lives: artificial light. What scientists are learning from the use of light as it affects health and mood has implications for us all. It forces us to rethink the way we light up our lives, especially urban dwellers and workers who spend so much time indoors. Apparently artificial light does much more than enable us to read and work without benefit of sunlight. It affects our bodies.

“It is important to recognize that this is a distinct syndrome with a well-defined cluster of symptoms,” says Dr. Thomas Wehr, an NIMH researcher. “We have measured some very interesting physiological changes specific to this kind of depression.” While typically depressed people have impaired sleep patterns and usually wake up early, winter depressives might sleep nine or 10 hours a night, wake up tired, and take naps. There is a 50% reduction in delta sleep, the deepest, most restful phase of the sleep cycle. Winter depressives gain weight, crave carbohydrates, and their libido pales. Their energy levels drop; monitors on their wrists show that they are less active than in summer.

Such symptoms begin earlier the farther north they live and abate when they visit sunny climates in the winter. Symptoms peak and wane according to the length of days. In New York, for instance, on the shortest day of the year – December 21 – the sun rose at 7:17 a.m. and set at 4:32 p.m., contrasted to 5:25 a.m. and 8:31 p.m. at the height of summer, a six hour difference in light. Such a distinct seasonal pattern implicates the external environment as the culprit, the most obvious being sunlight. Sunlight has already been shown to trigger cycles and seasonal behavior in animals, including reproduction, hibernation, migration, and molting. Animal behavior has been fooled by artificial light. Could it also fool humans? Apparently. In a recent NIMH study, a group of these depressives were treated with amounts of light that simulated that of summer days. Short winter days were stretched by six extra hours of light. The subjects were awakened before sunrise to bask in three hours of light, and dusk was delayed for three more.

Since sunlight is thought to be the missing element, the subjects were flooded with an artificial light that most closely resembles the full broad spectrum of the sun. At 20 times the intensity of normal indoor lighting, the light approximated the sensation of sitting on a shady porch or under a tree in mid-summer. Fluorescent lamps are roughly three times more intense than ordinary light bulbs. A bank of eight 4-watt fluorescent bulbs at eye level lit the participants’ rooms as they read, worked, or moved around. Within days this group responded with measurable mood changes, says Rosenthal. Their symptoms eased and energy levels rose, while a control group with a different threshold of light showed no change in behavior.

“Something in the external environment caused these changes,” says Wehr, “but we are not prepared to say exactly what it is at this point. It is true, though, that waking up these people and exposing them to this light treated their symptoms. Whether it is the break in sleep pattern, the wavelengths or intensity of light, or some other factor we can’t say at this point. The intensity of light used in the study may be well in excess of what is necessary to effect changes, stress the researchers. So they will continue to experiment with varieties of light therapy to determine the crucial element. The subjects themselves feel that sunlight is the missing ingredient.

One said that she felt as if she were in a “lower state of evolution since I function by photosynthesis.” Although these winter depressives showed an abnormal response to light, each of us responds to it in varying degrees. External light travels on a direct pathway from the retina to the part of the hypothalamus believed to be involved in running our biologic clock, the suprachiasmatic nuclei. The path continues to the tiny, cone-shaped pineal gland, which secretes the hormone melatonin. It is thought that melatonin affects the regulation of behavioral changes in animals, but this has not been clearly shown in humans. Sufficiently intense light suppresses the secretion of this chemical, making it a useful marker in determining light’s physical effect on behavior. The secretion of melatonin reflects light’s effect on the hypothalamus, itself highly sensitive to light. This complex part of the brain regulates a multitude of body functions, playing a vital role in reproduction, thirst, hunger, satiation, temperature, emotions, and sleep patterns. Depression is associated with disturbances in the hypothalamus.

“By stimulating the hypothalamus with light we may be correcting these disturbances in this group,” explains Rosenthal. Most artificial light differs from natural sunlight in wavelength (color) and intensity. Sunlight is very intense electromagnetic energy in a continuous spectrum of colors ranging from the short wavelengths of invisible ultraviolet light (UV) through blue, green, yellow, and into the infrared waves. Incandescent bulbs that light through heat light the majority of our homes. They lack the intensity of sunlight and produce light that is heavily infrared. “We don’t like the incandescent lights,” says Wehr. “It’s conceivable for this purpose that they are not the safest. You can get burned from the heat and the infrared radiation.”

Although some fluorescent lamps are described as “broad spectrum,” they do not have the same distribution of colors as sunlight. Widely used fluorescent lights peak in the yellow-green portion of the spectrum, wavelengths to which the eye is most sensitive. That makes them energy efficient but different from natural sunlight, notably in the blue-green spectrum where the sun’s emission or radiant energy is strongest. Additionally, conventional indoor lighting lacks the proper proportion of near-UV radiation of the sun that advocates claim to be vital to health and well being. Just as overexposure can be unhealthy, regulated doses of sun and UV can be therapeutic. UV is currently used to treat psoriasis and, experimentally, genital herpes and some forms of cancer in the early stages of the illness. Full-spectrum artificial light is widely used to cure potentially fatal type of infant jaundice. We need sunlight with its UV rays to metabolize vitamin D, necessary for the absorption of calcium, especially in growing children and the elderly.

Some studies show that working under true full-spectrum lights enhances productivity and reduces fatigue. Even critics concede that many people who are deprived of natural light, such as night or shift workers, suffer undue emotional stress. Whether or just how we should alter our indoor lighting is a question being raised by these studies. As Dr. Richard Wurtman, professor of endocrinology and metabolism at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has been saying for years, we should not take artificial lighting for granted. Lined up in the pro-sunlight camp, he has written, “Light is potentially too useful an agency of human health not to be more effectively examined and exploited.” As researchers isolate the specific part of the sun’s spectrum that is related to health and well-being, we could eventually create the perfect indoor environment with artificial lighting, says E. Woody Bickford, environmental engineer with Duro-Test, manufacturers of Vita-Lite. “Until we know,” he points out, “Vita Lite, with its complete range of visible and invisible light, is what we have to work with.”

For ordinary indoor lighting, two to four 40-watt lamps would provide some health benefits, he says. “The benefits seem to be proportional to the amount of light,” he adds. “We may need higher intensity in all our work levels. Perhaps the cutoff point is what you can afford,” Vita-Lite tubes are expensive, and most of our homes are not equipped with fixtures that can accommodate them.

Although many lighting experts are skeptical of the entire concept of light affecting our health, some light manufacturers are beginning to support research in the field, and one trade association has just established a new branch devoted to light and health. As the relationship between light and health becomes publicized, NIHM’s Rosenthal worries that people will try to treat themselves. “With the winter depressives it’s a matter of risks out-weighing benefits. Bright light can damage the retina; UV can be dangerous. But depression can be dangerous for them, too!”

Rather than attempting to cure themselves, people who think that they are winter depressives should contact the NIMH, Bethesda, Maryland 20205, for literature and specific recommendations as they become available

True Beauty Should Include Your Hands And Nails   by Janet Martin

The anti-aging industry is booming as more and more aging men and women are getting concerned about extending their youth and maintaining their beauty. However, many people have put their anti-aging efforts primarily on the care of their faces and necks. But aside from your face and neck, other parts of the body that can reveal your true age if not cared for properly are your hands. Thus, you should never forget to include your hands and nails in your efforts to slowdown aging.

Here are some tips you need to know in maintaining beautiful hands and nails:

Protect Your Hands From The Sun

If you think that your face and neck are the only parts of your body that you need to shield from the sun, you are making a big mistake. Your hands are also prone to developing sunspots, wrinkles, skin discolorations and brown spots due to frequent exposure to the harsh ultraviolet rays from the sun.

Before you step outside, especially during noontime, be sure to protect your skin with sunscreen or sun block. Make sure that the sun protection factor, or what is commonly known as SPF, is of a high number. If you want vitamin D from the sun, you must limit your sun exposure during the day and preferably only between 7AM to 9 AM. You also need to remember to put on sunscreen when you are driving your car.

Wear Gloves

Many people forget to wear protection when they are washing their clothes or using harsh ingredients, such as strong detergents, bleach and other chemicals. Some ingredients can instantly burn your skin or cause development of rashes, while others can make your skin dry. To prevent such chemicals from further damaging your hands, be sure to wear gloves when you are handling them.

Use Special Hand Cream

There are virtually thousands of hand products in the market so you will not have any difficulty in finding a lotion or cream that is specifically designed to make the skin on your hands smooth and soft. It is advisable to choose a product that is not greasy and one that can protect your hand for a longer time.

You should remember to put a hand cream after you wash your hands. No matter how much lotion you put in the morning and night, if you frequently wash your hands during the day, you might still end up having dry and wrinkled hands and palms.

Exfoliate Regularly

Any part of your body that is covered with skin should undergo exfoliation every once in a while to slough off dead skin cells. One of the reasons why your skin may be rough is because you do not exfoliate and scrub off dead cells regularly. You can use a body scrub with tiny beads or a loofah to exfoliate.

Be Mindful Of Your Soap

Most hand wash or soaps contain anti-bacterial ingredients and other chemicals that may be harsh on your skin. If you want to prevent aging, you need to find a hand soap that contains moisturizer. There are many in the market that not only give you full protection against germs, but also take care of your skin.

Mind Your Nails

Beautiful hands include well-kept and clean nails. Hence, you should also use products that take care of your nails and cuticles. Discolored nails can make your hands look older than they really are.

If you are having a manicure in a salon, be sure to check if the tools that they are going to use on you are sanitized. You can catch an infection if the nail-cleaning tools used are not clean and sanitized.

One nail problem that you need to treat immediately is nail fungus. This kind of infection does not only make your nails discolored and brittle, it can sometimes cause foul-smelling odor. You can get rid of nail fungus by applying a strong and high-quality anti-fungal product. One nail care system that can help you with nail fungus is Somasin. Could it be beneficial acquiring a villa in Antalya or should you keep using a hotel? by

If you want reach an educated decision on what the best option for your personal circumstances is, it is advisable that you go through some of the key advantages that a villa in Antalya can offer.

So you could be interested in some of the main positives, put together by the professionals at www.propertysunturkey.com:

The majority of us will admit that staying in a hotel can be annoying because everything is new and the amenities and features never manage to live up to your personal standards. Undoubtedly, the luxury that a hotel provides can be fantastic but your experience is never personal or custom made. Also many hotels have a formal personality, which not everyone feels comfortable with. However, if you decide to take a property or villa in Antalya then you stay can be tailored to your every need.

If you regularly head to work in Antalya then it could be wise to purchase a property in the area to give you a convenient landing pad. This can save you from high hotel fees if you are travelling to Antalya for business on a regular basis. What is more, the advantages of having your own Antalya property become more and more apparent if the amount of time you stay in Antalya varies on each trip or if you unexpectedly need to stay longer in order to finish a project. When you aren’t using it for business you could take the family for a holiday stay there or you could consider renting it out to other holiday makers.

If your kids are still young or you holiday with extended members of your family then you may want to take a property in Antalya. This is because having your own villa in Antalya could be a lot more convenient and maybe in the long run less expensive. Look at it this way, if you choose to have a family trip each year you have to pay for multiple rooms, one each for the couples and smaller ones for the kids. Over the years, this amount of money can mount up. Whereas, if you buy your own property in Antalya then you will no longer have to worry about paying for expensive hotel rooms for the whole family.

Should you be a permanent resident in the UK then you can plan a holiday, but heading out to the travel agents can be a real hassle. This is because it is something that you could do but are unlikely to do on a regular basis. Whereas, if you were to own a property in Antalya then you might jet off on holiday more often; just because you want to make the most of your holiday home. The great thing is that all you need to take into account is your air fare. Plenty of people that have taken Antalya properties, from www.propertysunturkey.com, have actually said that they now go to Antalya more often.

A key benefit of buying a property in Antalya is that it becomes your home, which means you can carry out an interior design scheme to your exact tastes. So if you are intent on bringing a little of England with you to Antalya then you can shape the villa to appear as similar as possible to your UK home. Alternatively, you may want to decorate the property in a way to make it look like other Antalya properties. This ability to decorate in whatever way you want is something that you cannot do if you opt to stay in a hotel.

Taking a property in Antalya means that you can become part of the neighbourhood and community. One of the things you miss-out on when you go to Antalya is that you never really get to know the locals as you are only staying for a couple of weeks. However, if you get your own property in Antalya then you will always stay in the same place and can therefore establish a rapport with your next door neighbours. You may even form strong relationships with the locals – by having a property they will know that you are committed to the area.

Hopefully, after reading this article you will now know whether it is beneficial buying your own Antalya holiday home.

Sleeved Blanket   by jekky

“Snuggie” cultural phenomenon

A woman wears a blue Snuggie.

Fans wearing the University of Texas Snuggie in the stands during a football game

In late 2008 and early 2009 the “Snuggie” brand of sleeved blankets became a pop culture phenomenon, sometimes described humorously as a “cult”. The Snuggie has become a camp icon.

The product became famous after a direct response commercial promoting the product was aired, leading to a mocking of the product and its commercial by comedians such as Jay Leno, Ellen DeGeneres, Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg, and Tim Burton, as well as website parodies and Lacie and Olivia. It was featured on television programs like Today where cast and crew donned Snuggie blankets for a segment which was described as looking like a gospel choir. Others have described mass-snuggie wearing as looking like a Harry Potter convention. The Associated Press likened it to “…a monk’s ensemble in fleece.” and proclaimed it the “ultimate kitsch gift”. The Snuggie initially sold singly for $14.95, and later in sets of two for $19.95.

Several hundred parodies of the commercial have appeared on YouTube as well as numerous fan pages on Facebook. The slanket was also mentioned in an episode of NBC’s 30 Rock entitled “The Ones.” The product has also been ridiculed as a “backwards robe” or simple reinvention of the coat on radio and television talk shows in the United States. Comparisons have also been made with the Thneed – a highly-promoted, amorphous garment in the Dr Seuss story, The Lorax.

On January 30, 2009 a group organized a pub crawl wearing Snuggies in Cincinnati, OH. In the following months they went on to complete over 40 more across the nation. Later, a group organized a Snuggie pub crawl in Chicago to raise money for an African orphanage, which led to similar sanctioned and independent events throughout the United States. A worker at Americans for Tax Reform, a conservative think tank, started the Facebook page “The Snuggie Cult”, and convinced fellow conservatives including Joe the Plumber, Tucker Carlson, and Andrew Breitbart to pose wearing the robes.

The phenomenon resulted in sales of the Snuggie and its rivals that far exceeded their distributors’ expectations: more than 20 million Snuggies as of December 2009 and 1 million Slankets as of February, 2009. The phenomenon has even resulted in variations such as Snuggie for Dogs and Snuggie with print – known as the “Custom Snuggie”

Australian radio program Labby, Camilla & Stav on B105 tested the claim that one can wear a Snuggie at sporting events, such as a soccer game, a football game or a basketball game. To test this, Labby and Stav wore Snuggies to a State of Origin game. The test was successful. They also dressed a statue of Wally Lewis, which stands in front of Suncorp Stadium, in a Snuggie live on the air. Security guards found it amusing at first but it was removed shortly after.

A reference to the Snuggie was made in the iCarly episode “iThink They Kissed”, where they had a commercial spoof for a fictional product called the “Sack”, which was an over-sized laundry bag that kept the wearer’s arms trapped.

Rock band Weezer is releasing their own Snuggie blanket, which is available in solid blue with the name “Weezer” on it in white font, as of November 2009. It has been rumored to be called the “Wuggie”.

In the summer of 2009, the Designer Snuggie was released to the public, as well as the Snuggie for Kids and the Snuggie for Dogs.. The Snuggie became especially popular during the 2009 Holiday Season.

On Disney Channel’s Original Series “Sonny with a Chance” Sonny (Demi Lovato) is seeing ordering in an episode A “Balarmy” “The blanket with arms”…making a spoof of the Snuggie.

Commercial variations

The product was first commercialized as the Freedom Blanket.

The Slanket was created by Gary Clegg and was helped in the creation of his prototype by Ryan Lafayette (before the Snuggie) in Maine in 1998 using a sleeping bag. Clegg’s mother made him a blanket with a single sleeve for use in his cold dorm room. Clegg later developed that into the Slanket with two sleeves.

The Snuggie, the most popular sleeved blanket product has been sold in the United States, Canada, and Australia. It was marketed primarily through a memorable television commercial. As of January 2009, over 20 million of the product had been sold.

The company markets the Snuggie via its website and television commercials along with many other as seen on TV products. It has been incorrectly assumed to be marketed by the company Fosdick Corporation.

Another well known variant, the Toasty Wrap, has been sold via infomercials hosted by Montel Williams as a method for saving on heating costs. However, based on the similarities of the Toasty Wrap’s advertising to that of Snuggie, it is probable that both brands originate with the same manufacturer.

Other variations are known as the Cuddlee, and the Dreamie which is sold in discount and variety stores.

A Product Review: “I have a 3 year old and a one year old and was looking to replace my tandem stroller with a side by side. I did a lot of research, and although I spent a lot more than I had planned to spend, I am not sorry! I absolutely love this stroller! I love that the weight limits go up to 55 lbs each. We should be able to use it for a couple of years. My kids don’t want to get out of it. The 3 year old said that it is very comfortable, and the 1 year old cried hysterically when I had to take him out of it to put it in the car. We took it to the mall today. It easily fit through all doors and through narrow clothing aisles. The cup holders came in handy for drinks. The baskets held my very large diaper bag without a problem. I love that it literally turns on a dime. The double handle is great for tall or petite parents, and it’s very soft and comfortable. It folds up very nicely (a little stiff at first, but is getting easier as it gets broke in). It’s a little heavy, but not near as heavy as my Graco tandem stroller. It’s a very attractive stroller. My only complaint would be that the frame is not red, but silver. I thought the red looked really neat in the picture, but mine is actually silver. It still looks nice. I would highly recommend!”

2. Graco Quattro Tour Duo Stroller Ionic

Price: Approximately $229.99

Product Description: “Graco Quattro Tour Duo The Graco Quattro Tour is a double stroller in the Ionic pattern, perfect for either a girl or a boy. At just 35 lbs, it is rather lightweight for a tandem stroller. It has all of the unique safety and comfort features parents look for with Graco strollers and doesn’t compromise in any way. The two seats are comfortable enough for baby and offer plenty of room. The Graco Quattro is a double stroller which will be loved by owners and envied by others. Graco Quattro Tour Strollers are easy to maintain. That is certainly a key feature for parents. The seat pad on the Graco Quattro Tour Stroller is removable and can even be machine washed. The Graco Quattro Stroller also has a high weight limit. The front seat can accommodate up to 50 lbs, while the rear seat can handle up to 40 lbs. The Graco Quattro also features a front seat car seat adapter so a second seat may be used. The Graco Quattro Tour is unique in that regard. A drop down basket is a trademark of Graco Quattro Tour strollers and of Graco strollers in general. It allows the parent to store all of the days necessities.”

A Product Review: “After doing tons of research on every double stroller out there, I finally settled on this one, and am so thrilled with it thus far. I love that it has higher weight limits, (my 17 month old is large) and he can crawl in and out by himself- just loves it and thinks its his new toy! Also love that the infant seat can go in either seat, a nice plus. It is just as heavy as my previous double (it is a double, double the weight) but it has so much more to offer than the other one. It folds much smaller, is easy to navigate, and feels lighter to push (even with 2 toddlers in). Just a wonderful product!”

3. InStep Safari Swivel Double Stroller (Yellow/Grey/Black)

Price: approximately $150

Product Description: “Schwinn Safari TT Double – Blue, Black and Grey, by Schwinn by InSTEP: This luxurious swivel-wheeled stroller for two is the industry benchmark. For both parents and children the safety and maneuverability of this item in stroller and jogger mode is unmatched. This go-anywhere, do-anything stroller has loads of storage and features a parent console. Features: Sturdy steel frame 16 inch rear wheels / 12 inch front Alloy Wheels Protective canopy Reclining seats 5-point harness Linked Parking brake Removable, extra thick padded seat Canopy viewing window Rear parent storage pouch Locking Swivel Wheel Napper/Grab Bar for children One hand fold Under seat storage basket Parent console (not pictured) Quick release wheels Padded push bar Fabric in rear for sun protection Maximum weight: 100 lbs.”

A Product Review: “This stroller is AMAZING!!! My twins love it!!! And so does my four-year old. It is so… easy to handle and the girls love being next to each other instead of one in front of the other. It is large enough for the girls and when necessary I put my four-year old in with them or he sits on the front. AND its still very easy to push. It folds up easily. A bit on the large side but not heavy. I would never recommend the tandem stroller to anyone after this. Front tire can be locked for jogging and unlocked for shopping. Stroller easily fits through store doors.”

Sun Incense Meaning

The Evolution of Clocks by Gradlein

The word clock probably came from the Latin word “clocca”, meaning bell, which gradually takes over “horologe”, suggesting the sound of bells which also characterized the prototype mechanical clocks that appeared during the 13th century in Europe.

Probably the earliest timekeeping device would be the sundial. Sundials measure the time of day from the direction of the shadow cast by the sun. Good sundials can accurately measure time by the hour but its greatest disadvantage is that it can only be used during the day when the sun is up. This prompted people to invent better ways of checking time.

Other ancient timekeeping device are candles and sticks of incense that burn at a fixed pace. The hourglass, a device where sand slowly trickles down a container at a set pace, is also used for timed activities but is not used for checking the time of day.

Water clocks followed the earlier timekeeping devices before they were replaced with pendulum clocks in the 17th century. Water clocks, also called clepsydrae, could also be the earliest timekeeping device aside from the day-counting tally stick and sundial. Water clocks initially were just operated by means of a regulated flow of liquid into or out from a vessel where the amount is then measured. However, later designs, credited to the Greek and Roman civilizations, included complex gearing to show the exact time, much like how pendulum clocks operate. It is worthy to mention that the “need to know time” did not exist until the Industrial Revolution when working hours were tracked.

An increase in the number of references to clocks and horologes in church records between 1280 and 1320 was seen by many scholars as an indication that a new type of clock mechanism had been devised. Modifications were made on existing clock mechanisms that used water power. Some were changed to use falling weights, controlled by an oscillating mechanism (probably taken from existing alarm devices). The change marked the beginning of true mechanical clocks.

Clock-making became an art for clockmakers and was developed in various ways. Clocks could be impressive showpieces to demonstrate skilled craftsmanship, or less expensive, mass-produced items for domestic use. Improving accuracy and building smaller clocks became a technical challenge for clockmakers. Many different mechanisms were tried to improve accuracy. Spring-driven clocks, for example, appeared during the 15th century. It was a chamber clock given to the Duke of Burgundy around 1430. The problem presented by the spring mechanism was how to keep the clock’s accuracy when the spring experiences deterioration. It then led to the creation of the modern going barrel in 1760.

Nowadays, clocks are plentiful and have different designs. Many are compact and run on batteries unlike earlier ones that used a pendulum-type mechanism. There are still wall clocks that have a pendulum but they are mostly for design only. Decorative wall clocks come in all shapes and sizes but where you put them should still be considered. Large iron wall clocks, for example, would fit a Victorian styled dining room but not in a modern one.

Small clocks can be given to friends as gifts and nobody wouldn’t like another clock added to their home. Large decorative clocks would look good in a large home and can even be sold as novelty for a good price. Some unique clocks can also fetch a good sum if you try selling it online.
