The NBA is one of the more popular sporting leagues in the world, with 30 teams in the United States and Canada, in addition to players hailing from countries all over the world. The league was founded in 1946 and has maintained a strong presence in the United States ever since, as it has continued to grow over the years.

Many people do not know that the first professional basketball game was actually played in Canada, as the Toronto Huskies hosted the New York Knickerbockers in 1946. While this might be surprising to some, it shows the strong international influence that the game holds to this day.

One of the more successful franchises over the past 10 years has been the Phoenix Suns, who began play in 1968. While this team has never won an NBA championship, they won three division titles between 2005 and 2007 and went all the way to the NBA finals in 1976 and 1993 .

Charles Barkley is recognized as one of the best players in team history, as he led the Suns to the finals in 1993 and raised hopes all over the city. Barkley, however, could not help the team win the championship and he finished his NBA career without ever winning one. After trading Barkley, the team struggled for a few years as it attempted to rebuild.

The Suns had originally drafted Steve Nash in 1996, but promptly traded him because they already had two other point guards on the roster. In 2004, the team reacquired Nash via free agency, which helped the team to some of its best seasons in history. In 2005, Nash won the NBA’s MVP award, a feat that he repeated in the following season as well. In the season, the Suns led the league with a 62-20 record, before losing in the Western Conference finals to the San Antonio Spurs.

Currently, the Suns are in a rebuilding mode, as they lost players like Amar’e Stoudemire and Shawn Marion in recent years. The team is looking to rebound from these rough seasons in the near future, as they have been very aggressive in the trade market and will receive a high draft pick in 2011. The Suns faithful are optimistic that the team will improve very shortly and that they will return to the glory days as a result.

The NBA’s presence in Phoenix and other cities remains strong, as the league has a positive influence on many of these communities. Phoenix has long been regarded as a city where professional sports franchises struggle, but the Suns are still going strong, despite the fact that the team is rebuilding.

Basketball is truly becoming a global game, as can be seen by the Suns’ roster. Team captain Steve Nash hails from Victoria, British Columbia Canada, while shooting guard Mickaël Piétrus is from France and center Marcin Gortat is from Poland. As a result, the Phoenix Suns represent the new NBA, which is open to players from countries all over the world.
