Most boys who grew up playing basketball only have one ultimate dream: to someday play in the NBA. For some, the dream can become a reality. For others, the dream will just stay a dream. Of the hundreds and thousands of young kids who play and dream of playing in the NBA, there is a very small percent of them making it to the big league. Very few are chosen or destined to become NBA players.

Let us make Kobe Bryant for example; as he is my favorite NBA player second to none. He was a high school kid from Lower Merion High School. He went in to the NBA straight from high school joining the ranks of Kevin Garnett and others who made the similar leap from high school to the pros. He was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets and was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Vlade Divac.

During his first two years with the Lakers, he was a back up shooting guard subbing in for the then starting shooting guard, Eddie Jones. It wasn’t on his third year that he was relegated to the starting line-up because Eddie Jones was injured. He flourished in the starting role and together with Shaquille O’Neal formed one of the best 1-2 combinations the league has ever seen. They won championships for three straight years; 2000-2002. Together with their coach Phil Jackson, they were destined to become a dynasty in the making.

Then a certain twist of events happened. Shaq and Kobe had a falling out. Shaq told Lakers management that he cannot stand playing with Kobe anymore. His words were it’s either me or him. Even though they made it to the Finals the following year, they lost in 5 games to the eventual champs, the Detroit Pistons. We all know what happened next. The Lakers sent Shaquille O’Neal to the Miami Heat for Lamar Odom and one more player.
