Sun safety should begin early in life. Overexposure to ultraviolet radiation increases risk of skin damage. Ultraviolet rays (UV) are an invisible form of radiation. They penetrate your skin and damage your skin cells. It can happen during any season and at any temperature. Sunburns are signs of skin damage and suntans are not healthy either. Sun protection is beneficial even if signs of sun damage have already appeared. It will prevent further damage.

Here are a few tips on how to protect from damaging ultraviolet rays:

Wearing the right clothing plays an important role in sun protection so cover up if you must be in the sun. Long sleeves, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses are the best sun protection practices.

Be very careful near water, snow, and sand. All these reflect the damaging sun rays and a chance of sunburns increases dramatically.

If you have to be in the sun in addition to wearing protective clothing, seek shade whenever possible. Trees, awnings, tents, umbrellas, buildings all provide sun protection.

Avoid intentional tanning. Instead, consider using a sunless self-tanning product and use sunscreen with that product. For vitamin D, take vitamin supplements.

Try not to be in the sun between the hours of 10am and 4pm. During this time, sun’s rays are strongest. Even on a cloudy day, up to 80% of the ultraviolet rays can get through.

It doesn’t matter what our skin color is, we are all potential victims of sun rays. Folks who need to be extra careful in the sun are those who have blond, red hair; pale skin; a family member who has skin cancer; and those who have been treated for skin cancer.

Use a sunscreen that has a Sun Protection Factor of at least 30 and protects against both ultraviolet A and B rays. Apply it generously to all open skin. While outside, use it every two hours even on cloudy days. And do not forget your ears, hands, and neck. Use lip balm on lips.
