UV Protection Clothing Versus Other Types of Sun Protection by David A. Shir
No doubt about it – UV protection clothing is a necessity in this modern world for many reasons. On one hand, we live in a society where tanned people on the streets and the runways are highly desirable human beings, with their image of glitz, glamour and gold. On the other hand, the sun’s heat seems so much stronger than in previous years, which may be attributed to the ozone’s thinning condition.
You also have other ways of protecting yourself from the heat of the sun regardless if it is in the dead of winter or the heat of summer. You have options like polarized sunglasses, umbrellas and hats as well as sunscreens and sunblocks. However, there is nothing like UV protection clothing to provide for the best sun protection.
Read on and find out how sun protection clothing stacks up against other types of UV protection methods.
Versus Sunscreens and Sunblocks
Sunscreens and sunblocks have been around for a long time in sun protection. These are made from special ingredients that prevent ultraviolet rays from damaging the skin, thus, the name UV filters. The ingredients include oxybenzone, which is a suspected photocarcinogen, as well as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.
However, many of these topical applications have been proven inadequate by recent studies on many aspects. The ingredients in themselves are not as effective as once thought against ultraviolet rays and, worse, many of these components of sunscreens have been shown as potential carcinogens.
This is very ironic, indeed. While you applying sunscreen and sunblock on your skin thinking that you will be safe from skin cancer, these things are actually increasing your risks!
You will opt for UV protection clothing instead of spending more money on sunscreens and the like. Then again, you should not forgo the sunscreen either since it also adds a layer of protection – ask your doctor for the safest brand and buy it.
Versus Umbrellas and Caps
So many have the misconception that just because they are already shaded by an umbrella or that their faces are hidden under a baseball cap that the level of sun protection is already sufficient. Well, they cannot be more wrong than had they believed that the sun revolved around the earth.
In fact, the sun’s ultraviolet rays will still wreak damage on your skin because of the principle of reflection. Surfaces can reflect the sun’s rays into the surrounding area such that the effect may be lesser in degree but the danger is still present. Studies have shown that as much as 90 percent of the ultraviolet rays can be reflected off these surfaces.
So, yes, do slather on the sunscreens and use an umbrella but you must still use sun protection clothing. In this way, you are getting maximum protection against the sun’s damaging effects including leathery skin, premature wrinkles and, worse, skin cancer.
Sunscreens and sunblocks as well as umbrellas and caps are good for your skin when used properly. But you must always have the benefit of UV protection clothing, which is very near your body and, thus, more effective.
UV Protection Clothing is one of the best choices by which you can practice sun protection safely.
